Talk by Rabbi Lynn Gottlieb: A Rabbi Speaks Out Against Israel’s Attacks on Gaza and Against the Israeli Occupation of Palestinian Territory (speaking via Skype) Lynn Gottlieb is founder and coordinator of Shomer Shalom Network for Jewish Nonviolence. Author of She Who Dwells Within: A Feminist Vision of Renewed Judaism, Lynn Gottlieb celebrates her 42th year in rabbinic service in 2014. Gottlieb lives in Berkeley, California, and is a storyteller, author, and peace activist who has received several human rights awards. Her writing appears in more than 40 publications, and she has performed her work throughout the world. She is cofounder of the Muslim-Jewish Peacewalk and was a founding elder of The Community of Living Traditions. According to her website:
Rabbi Gottlieb currently works with the Fellowship of Reconciliation (FOR, of which Helena SERPAJ has been a local chapter since 1994) as coordinator of the Interfaith Peacewalks project, a co-leader of Artist Delegations to Palestine, and as a contributing editor to Fellowship magazine. Gottlieb is a pioneer feminist rabbi, storyteller, percussionist, peace educator, writer, ceremonialist, community activist and clown. She is deeply committed to a life grounded in the creativity, joy and wisdom of the Torah (teachings) of Nonviolence. Her journey includes life long activism with The Fellowship of Reconciliation and ongoing pursuit of Israeli Palestinian conflict transformation based on principles of active nonviolence. Lynn served as a pulpit rabbi from 1973 to 1980 with Temple Beth Or of the Deaf and Mishkan, An Experimental Shul in NY and from 1981 to 2005 with Congregation Nahalat Shalom in Albuquerque, NM which she co-founded. Since 1964, Lynn has engaged in multifaith, intergenerational and multicultural organizing around issues of economic and racial justice, gender justice and ‘the demilitarization of land and life’. Lynn’s love of Jewish cultural and spiritual arts embodies her way of being Jewish in the world. The most common request Lynn hears? “Tell me a story!”

Journalist Alison Weir leads a Dialogue on the Gaza Attacks by Israel and war and media coverage. Alison Weir is founder of If Americans Knew and president of Council for the National Interest. If Americans Knew is an independent research and information-dissemination institute, with particular focus on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Bozeman Friends of Palestine Demonstration

Please join Bozeman Friends of Palestine on Wednesday, August 13, from noon until 2pm for a demonstration in support of Gaza, opposing the assault on Gaza by Israel, which has resulted in over 1900 deaths of Palestinians, 500,000 refugees, 36,000 damaged homes that are now uninhabitable, half of the population without running water and many more with very little water. Israel has maintained a siege on Gaza, blocking the vast majority of life-sustaining imports and exports since 2006. It has also engaged in massive bombing campaigns regularly throughout this time (2012, 2008-9. . . .) through continual support of US weapons and funds (over $3 billion per year).

Bozeman Friends of Palestine will be standing at the corner of Rouse and Main in downtown Bozeman with our signs in support of Gaza in order to gather more support for Gaza from other Bozemanites and tourists, educate many passersby through conversations and free literature (hand-outs of magazine Washington Report on Middle East Affairs), and gather emails for further organization of Palestinian support.

While Gaza and Israel are in the midst of a ceasefire, which is scheduled to end before Wednesday, continuous demonstrations throughout the US in support of Gaza are important for several reasons, including:

  1. We are showing the Palestinians that people around the world care about their plight;
  2. We are sending the message to John Kerry and President Obama that we demand the siege on Gaza be lifted and the bombing be stopped forever. (If Israel does not agree to end the blockade of Gaza and open the borders, the fighting will most likely continue. For, as many Gazans say, “Either we die a slow death through the blockage or a quick death through the bombing. Neither is tolerable.”)

Demonstration for Gaza in Bozeman

Please join Bozeman Friends of Palestine in a nonviolent protest of Israel’s merciless, illegal, unjustified assault on Gaza on Thursday, July 31.

As of this writing, the Palestinian death toll in Gaza has reached at least 1,050, over 80% civilians, including at least 230 children. Also, 9 Palestinians were killed in the West Bank over the weekend by soldiers and settlers. Israel says 43 of its soldiers and three civilians have died. More than 180,000 Palestinians have displaced since this three-week massacre began. Read more here:
